Graffiti and Urban Art New Way of Expression

Graffiti and urban are fast becoming one of the most talked about and controversial pieces of art since the picture of Mona Lisa.

The reason being is because of the new way to interpret images and successfully transfer them to canvas or paper. Urban artists in there own right are very talented and no longer is graffiti considered 100% as part of the underground.

The real greatness in urban art lies in peoples passion to design or draw not for a living but as a hobby. Now is the chance for urban artists all over the world to actually make a career out of there modern art form pushing the boundaries of the way that the current world perceives art.
What is art and urban art? Some people would consider a lot of things art in this day and age, even the simplest stacking of cups has now taken an art form.

Urban art is where the truth really lies through fresh art born out of an artists mind and with no way to express themselves and there talent they turn to the streets.

Does urban art belong on the streets? The simple answer is no and yes, urban and street art is just like any other form of art the only difference is that the people involved do not have the chance to show people there work so a place we are always likely to see graffiti is on the streets and walls. But not to say that it only belongs on the street graffiti is now a form of modern art and they have been used for social events to create a buzz and you can also find different forms of graffiti in galleries around the world.

Another major factor in why so many artists are turning to urban and graffiti is the simple fact that they will be able to identify themselves with a style and niche, they always bring something new to the table that people have not seen or experienced before unlike traditional art which is somewhat now classed as normal.

There is alot of courses and schools you can now also go, to study urban art and graffiti that's how well it is doing. A lot of graffiti artists are now international stars such as banksy who not only uses the traditional aerosol paint but also performs graffiti art with stickers, stencils and tiling, his graffiti and many other world renowned artists have made it clear that for a fact, urban art is the new way of expression.

Graffiti An Urban Art Form

You can travel almost anywhere in the world, and you will probably see graffiti. Although graffiti art is usually more common in big cities, the reality is that it can occur in almost any community, big or small.

The problem with graffiti art is the question of whether it's really art, or just plain vandalism. This isn't always an easy question to answer, simply because there are so many different types of graffiti. Some is simply a monochrome collection of letters, known as a tag, with little artistic merit. Because it's quick to produce and small, it is one of the most widespread and prevalent forms of graffiti.Although tagging is the most common type of graffiti, there are bigger, more accomplished examples that appear on larger spaces, such as walls.

These are often multicolored and complex in design, and so start to push the boundary of whether they should really be defined as graffiti art.If it wasn't for the fact that most graffiti is placed on private property without the owner's permission, then it might be more recognized as a legitimate form of art.

Most graffiti art, however, is only an annoyance to the property owner, who is more likely to paint over it or remove it than applaud its artistic merit. Many solutions have been put into practice around the world, with varying degrees of success. Paints have been developed that basically cause graffiti paint to dissolve when applied, or else make it quick and easy to remove. Community groups and government departments coordinate graffiti removal teams.

In some places you can't buy spray paint unless you're over 18. Cans of spray paint are locked away in display cases. In a nearby area the local council employs someone to go around and repaint any fences defaced by graffiti.

A friend of mine has had his fence repainted 7 times at least, and it took him a while to find out why it was happening! Certainly the amount of graffiti in my local area has dropped substantially in the last year or two, so it appears these methods are working to a great extent. But is removing the graffiti doing a disservice to the artistic community? Maybe if some of the people behind the graffiti art were taken in hand and trained, they could use their artistic skills in more productive ways.

It hardly makes sense to encourage these artists to deface public property, and so commit a crime. But perhaps there are other ways to cooperate with the graffiti artists rather than just opposing them. Graffiti artists can create sanctioned murals for private property owners and get paid for it.Maybe we need to start at a very basic level, and find a way to encourage the creation of graffiti art on paper or canvas, rather than walls.

After all, who would remember Monet or Picasso if they'd created their masterpieces on walls, only to have them painted over the next day? Finding a solution to such a complex situation is never going to be easy, but as more graffiti art is being recognized in galleries around the world, we do need to try.

Vandals and Graffiti

If you have ever been at the hands of people who have a blatant disregard for your property, and feel it within their rights to daub their favourite football clubs, who they are currently in love with, or just sheer profanities on your walls, then read on - it's just possible this could solve all your problems.

A house in a nearby town has suffered dreadfully over the years with graffiti problems on one of its walls which is windowless and right against the pavement opposite is a bit of a rough pub. An ideal "canvas" for drunken revellers let loose with a spray can. The owners religiously painted it at least once a month in a nice soft cream colour and it kept being mindlessly defaced. Very distressing and soul-destroying to say the very least.

Finally, during the last World Cup, it appears that someone had a brainwave - in a last ditch attempt to finally stop these vandals, they painted the whole of the side of the house as an England flag.

A novel move and topical. I don't even remember which world cup it was. However, the interesting point I am making here, is a tale of success to warm the heart! I am happy to report that there has been not one instance of graffiti ever since! This goes to prove there is at least a modicum of allegiance or respect for the flag, even if only due to supporting your country's football team.

If you are suffering a similar problem, it may be worth trying this solution. It's not everyone's ideal decor, I know, but it still looks quite good; noticeably tall and proud and of course, is certainly an improvement on the constant foul scribblings that were previously there.

An Essay Concerning The Recognition of Some Forms of Graffiti As Art

Graffiti art is an art form. The reasons, including aesthetic criteria, as to why it is an art form far outweigh the criticism ofillegality, incoherence, and nonstandard presentation. The objective of this paper is to explain how graffiti art overcomes theseconcerns and thereby can be considered as an art form. Suppose that Leonardo, Monet, Picasso, or any of the recognized artisans of Western European culture were alive in thepresent day. Then, suppose that one of these famous artists decided to paint a masterpiece on the side of your house or onyour front door or on a wall in your neighborhood.

Would Picasso or Monet's markings be graffiti or art or vandalism or graffitiart? The answer may vary across people, but I would claim that those markings are art in the form of graffiti. Their markingswould qualify as vandalism only if they appeared on private or public property without permission. The same answer holds forthe present day, genre of graffiti known as graffiti art. Graffiti art originated in the late 1960's, and it has been developing ever since.

However, it is not readily accepted as being artlike those works that are found in a gallery or a museum. It is not strictly denied the status of genuine art because of a lack ofform or other base aesthetic elements. Most of the opposition to graffiti art is due to its location and bold, unexpected, andunconventional presentation, but its presentation and often illegal location does not necessarily disqualify it as art. In this paper, Ielucidate how some forms of graffiti can be accepted as art.

This type of graffiti is known as graffiti art, subway art, or spraycanart. The arguments of vandalism and unconventional presentation as negating the ability of some graffiti to be art is usurped byan explanation of those properties apparent in some forms of graffiti that do qualify it, aesthetically, as art. To show this, Iprovide a historical context of graffiti, and then I provide persuasive evidence that graffiti art is art. The origins of graffiti go back to the beginnings of human, societal living. Graffiti has been found on uncovered, ancient,Egyptian monuments, and graffiti even was preserved on walls in Pompeii. Graffiti is the plural form of the Italian word grafficar. In plural, grafficar signifies drawings, markings, patterns, scribbles, or messages that are painted, written, or carved on a wall orsurface.

Grafficar also signifies "to scratch" in reference to different wall writings ranging from "cave paintings", bathroomscribbles, or any message that is scratched on walls. In reference to present day graffiti, the definition is qualified by adding thatgraffiti is also any unsolicited marking on a private or public property that is usually considered to be vandalism. There are various forms of graffiti. One of the simplest forms is that of individual markings such as slogans, slurs, or politicalstatements.

Examples of this type of graffiti commonly are found in bathrooms or on exterior surfaces, and this graffiti is usuallyhandwritten. Another simple form is that of the tag which is a fancy, scribble-like writing of one's name or nick-name. That is,tag signifies one's name or nick-name. Both the tag or individual mark have little or no aesthetic appeal. While they might suggest a flair or style of writing, these formsfail to qualify as example of superb graffiti art because of a lack of aesthetic qualities and inability to produce a maximalaesthetic feeling in the viewer. In fact, the tag or individual mark is not produced for artistic purposes.

It is basically a means toindicate the writer's presence, i.e., the age old statement of "I was here." Gang markings of territory also fit the definition ofgraffiti, and they mainly consists of tags and messages that provide "news" of happenings in the neighborhood. Murals forcommunity enhancement and beautification are also a form of graffiti even though they are not usually thought of this waybecause most murals are commissioned. These are more colorful and complex. They take considerable amount of skill tocomplete, and murals can be done in a graffiti art style or a traditional pictorial scene. The last form of graffiti is graffiti art whichis the creative use of spraypaint to produce an artwork that is graffiti or done in a graffiti-like style, and this the is the concern ofthis discussion.

Modern graffiti art originated in New York City, and it was known first as "New York Style" graffiti. This art form began in thelate 1960's when teens used permanent markers to tag or write their names, followed by the number of the street on which theylived, in subway cars. This trend originated with the appearance of "Taki 183" which was the tag of a Greek American boynamed Demitrius. Tagging soon became a way to get one's name known throughout the city. However, it should be noted thattagging appeared in Philadelphia before New York. The monikers, "Cornbread" and "Top Cat" were well known inPhiladelphia, and when Top Cat's style appeared in New York, it was dubbed as "Broadway Style" for its long skinny lettering. The advent of the spraypaint allowed for the tag to develop in size and color. For it was not enough just to have one's namescrawled over any available and visible surface because everyone was doing this.

The spraycan separated the taggers from theartists in that color, form, and style could be emphasized creatively with this new tool to produce s tag as a part of an overallartistic production. The tag which is monochromatic and a writing style that just about anyone can do, gave way to thethrow-up, which is a two color tag usually in outline or bubble-like lettering. Again this style is not too difficult, but soon morecomplicated styles evolved. The stamp is a little harder and involves the use straight letters to produce a 3-D effect. The piece, which is short for masterpiece, appeared next, and it is a large multicolor work. A production is a piece that is usually on thescale of a mural, and it involves original or familiar cartoon characters in addition to the writer or graffiti artist's name.

It shouldbe noted that every graffiti form listed involves the artist's name, whether as the central feature or as an ornament within thepiece because writers want to be known. Hence, finding new and creative ways to display one's tag in a highly visible place, asopposed to just scribbling it everywhere, was the fundamental force spurring the development of modern graffiti art. In the middle to late 1970's, writers started painting subway trains; thus the name, subway art. Train painting was instrumentalto the development of graffiti art because the trains became the stage for the style wars which was a time when everyone whowanted to be recognized as the best artist or the "King" or "Queen" of a subway line got- up, i.e., painted trains as often aspossible.

If one's name was on a train in a colorful and unique style, it was guaranteed to be seen by many people; mostimportantly by the other writers, because the subway trains in New York City travel in circuits throughout different boroughs. To be a "King" or "Queen" one could not just get-up or simply paint his or her name in a thousand different places. On thecontrary, style and artistic talent were and continue to be extremely important.

The goal was and is to create burners which arepieces that stand out because of creativity, color, vibrancy, crisp outlines, i.e. no drips, and overall artistic appeal. It is therecognizable artistic talent of the graffiti artist that established his or her reign on the subway line and not just the appearance ofs name in a thousand different places. The styles that emerged with the previously mentioned forms during this time were roundpopcorn or bubble letters, wildstyle which is an intricate, interlocking type of calligraphy that is difficult and almost impossible toread, computer and gothic lettering, 3-D lettering, fading which blends colors, and the use of cartoon characters. The ability toproduce complicated pieces is what separates the tagger from the graffiti artist; graffitist for short. Taggers scribble andgraffitists do art.

The high visibility of the train and the potential audience encouraged more artists to participate in this new form of art. DespiteNew York City's vigorous anti-graffiti efforts the style flourished and soon influenced artists in cities all over the world. Thebiggest promotional vehicle for graffiti art worldwide has been the Hip-Hop phenomenon which is the culture associated withrap music. Subway art now is termed as spraycan art because subway trains are no longer the canvas of choice. Besides, every graffitistcould not possibly do all of his or her work on subway cars because of laws, police, and the dangerous environment of thesubway yards and lay-up stations. Ironically, the latest innovation in spraycan art has been that of "freight art" in which graffitistspaint railroad, freight cars with the expectation that their artwork will travel across the United States and throughout thecontinent.

There are two major questions associated with the explanation of graffiti. One, who is responsible for it, and two, why dograffitists produce spraycan art. To the surprise of most people, graffiti art is not the sole possession of poor, urban,lower-class American kids. Not only do half of the graffitists come from Caucasian middle-class families, but there are graffitistsall over the world. When asked, "What sorts of kids write graffiti?", police officer Kevin Hickey of the New York TransitPolice Department's graffiti squad replied, "The type of kids that live in New York City." They range from the ultra-rich to theultra-poor.

There is no general classification of the kids Graffitist range in age from 12-30 years old, and there are male andfemale artists. In the past, graffiti artists usually worked alone, but the size and complexity of pieces as well as safety concernsmotivated artists to work together in crews, which are groups of graffitists that vary in membership from 3 to 10 or morepersons. A member of a crew can be down with, i.e., affiliated, with more than one crew. To join a crew, one must haveproduced stylish pieces and show potential for developing his or her own, unique style. A crew is headed by a king or queenwho is usually that person recognized as having the best artistic ability among the members of the crew.

The reasons and values for why one might engage in graffiti art are as varied as the artists who produce it. A chief reason is theprospect of fame and recognition of one's artistic talent. Graffiti is also a form of self expression. The art as "writing" is acreative method of communicating with other writers and the general public. What it communicates is the artist's identity, expression, and ideas. Judgments are based solely on one's artistic ability. This type of communication is of value because itlinks people regardless of cultural, lingual, or racial differences in way that nothing else can. In addition, producing graffiti artwith a crew builds team work in that the crew works together for the accomplishment of a common goal.

The feeling of thisachievement in league with others is of value to the artist. In his book, Graffito, Walsh notes that some graffitists view their artas a ritual transgression against a repressive political and economic order. For some artists see themselves as revolutionariesreacting against the established art market or gallery system in that art is not only that which appears in the gallery as determinedby the curator. Some artists also view their creations on public and private spaces as a statement against Western ideas ofcapitalism and private property. Of course, the majority of graffitists enjoy what they do and find it to be fun, rewarding, andexciting. Although these reasons are valid, they do not conclusively settle the matter as to why graffiti art is art or why it is avalid art form despite its illegal origins.

Graffiti as seen and experienced on the New York City subway trains and that which developed into the modern-day form ofspraycan art is art. The production of graffiti art includes established techniques and styles, and the art form also ischaracterized by a standard medium; spraypaint. For example, novices are taught how to use spraypaint according to various styles and how to adjust nozzles as well as how tofit and use other types of aerosol caps onto spraycans for different artistic effects. The forms of graffiti art have developedthrough the years from the mere gestures of tagging to established conventional practices of the graffiti art world such ascreating the tag according to a method, like wildstyle, that makes it an integral, flowing element of the overall piece. In addition, graffiti art is not a spontaneous activity like tagging in the form of fancy scribble.

The completion of a piece or aproduction involves a great deal of imagination, planning, and effort. The graffitist first does a sketch. Then he or she plans out characters and selects colors. Next, the artist selects his or her"canvas" or surface and does a preliminary outline, followed by a filling in of colors and ornamentation, and then the final outlineis completed. Graffiti can also be analyzed according to the elements of lines, color, and structures that are present in the work in order toproduce a narrative about it. Another significant reason why graffiti art can be viewed as art is by considering the producer'sintention.

Graffitists intend their work to be apprehended as art that can communicate feelings and ideas to the audience. This isin line with Tolstoy's mandate that art must allow people to express ideas and share in each other's feelings via the artwork. Plus, graffiti art has a function of not only communicating to others, but it also beautifies the community by appearing on areasthat normally would be eyesores, such as a wall in a vacant lot or an abandoned building. Furthermore, all of the aestheticproperties and criteria from the base element of color to the complex issue of artist intention which are ascribed to other worksin order to characterize them as art can all be found in examples of spraycan art.

The only difference between those works in agallery or museum and graffiti art in terms of how and why the latter is not readily accepted as art is due to its location andpresentation. Indeed the issues of location and presentation are the most significant obstacles to a wholehearted acceptance of spraycan artas art. Graffiti art cannot be disregarded simply because it is not presented in the conventional location and manner, i.e., framedand placed in a museum or gallery. The location of it on a wall or subway without permission only makes it unsolicited art. Assuch, it can be called vandalism, but again, this does not disqualify it as art. Rather the categorization of graffiti art as unsolicited art that is vandalism only justifies a removal of it from the surface. On theother hand, the vandalism aspect of graffiti art can be considered as a uniqueness and not a detracting feature of the art formbecause as vandalism, graffiti art is very temporary. A piece which might be sixty feet long, twelve feet high, and take twenty tothirty cans of paint and at least eight hours to produce might be gone in a matter of minutes. Another challenge to graffiti art is that it is forced upon the public because people have no say in its production despite the factthat public funds are used to remove it.

Graffitists counter with the argument that buildings, billboards, campaign ads, and flyersare also forced on the public in a similar manner. Spraycan art suffers other criticisms because of the generic characterization of all graffiti as being gang related and simply amatter of tagging. However, only 20% of graffiti is gang related [ed. note: according to Walsh, who mentions this number in_Graffito_. Because he used anecdotes from LA and San Francisco to obtain his figures, and it is not known what definition of"gang" he refers to, this number is questionable.], and it should be noted that not all instances of graffiti art are good examples ofthe art form; just like not all framed artistic creations are good examples of painting or even worthy of being called art. Graffiti is also criticized for being too hard to understand, but certainly this cannot keep graffiti art from being art anymore thanthe obscurity of abstract art or Picasso's cubism prevents either one of those hard to understand art forms from beingconsidered as art. Goldman's aesthetic theory is of use to clarify the problem of location and presentation in relation to graffitiart. Goldman claims that art takes us to other worlds in a manner that is quite fulfilling sensually and aesthetically.

This removal fromthe real world is enhanced by the mood of the gallery or the dark setting of the opera house. Most of the time when weencounter art and are transported by it to other worlds, we are in a location in which we expect this to happen. However, this isnot the case with graffiti art. For it appears suddenly and in unexpected places. Thus, when we apprehend it, we aretransported to these other worlds at a time and in a place that we are not accustomed to doing so. We are not used to art approaching us outside of conventional settings such as a museum. Instead of the audience going to viewthe art form, spraycan art reaches out to the viewer; sometimes in a startling manner.

One can only imagine how shocking andsurprising it might have been to see a colorful train moving swiftly through the dingy stations and drab boroughs of New YorkCity. Spraycan art is an art form that is completely open to the public because it is not hemmed in by the confines or "laws" ofthe gallery system or the museum. Perhaps, this is its only crime. The institutional theory, in brief, mandates that art is that which is displayed by the art world to be accepted as art asdetermined by the members of the art world. Since graffiti art is not permanently established in any galleries or museums, oftenit is argued that it is not art, but even this criticism falls short because there are instances where the art world has recognizedgraffiti art as art. In the 1970's, galleries in New York and Europe brought graffiti to the attention of the art world. Lee Quinones, a prominent writer in New York and one of the few graffitists to bomb, i.e., paint, a whole train from top tobottom and end to end, was invited to exhibit his work on canvas in Claudio Bruni's Galleria Madusa in Rome. Likewise, YakiKornblit of Denmark, an art dealer, helped to launch the careers of several graffitists during the years of 1984 and 1985 atMuseum Boyanano von Beuningen in Rotterdam. Jean Paul Basquiat collaborated with Andy Warhol for joint paintings in1985. And recently, in 1996, Barry McGee, also known by his tag, "Twist", was commissioned to do a graffiti art mural for theSan Francisco Museum of Modern Art. As graffiti was introduced to the art world, two trends happened. One, the art world of collectors, dealers, curators, artists, andthe like helped graffitists evolve in style, presumably by sharing their artistic knowledge with the newcomers.

Two, the exposurehelped to expand graffiti to all parts of the world. Furthermore, cities such as LA and Chicago have recognized the talent of graffitists by providing a means for them to do legalgraffiti art which has helped to foster the art form and lessened the amount of graffiti art that appears in the city as vandalism. Likewise, organizations of graffiti artists such as the Phun Factory or the United Graffiti Artists in New York solicit places to dolegal graffiti such as abandoned buildings, businesses, or community walls in parks. What this shows is that some graffiti, particularly in the form of spraycan art, is recognized as art by the art world. This recognition of graffiti art by the art world is important for two reasons. One because of the social, political, and economicinfluence of the art world, its recognition of graffiti art as art helps to increase the awareness and overall understanding of the artform. Two, this recognition prevents the sweeping generalization that all graffiti is vandalism and therefore something that alwaysshould be eradicated. For in actuality, spraycan art does not necessarily have to be illegal or on a wall to be considered asgraffiti art, although, philosophically, this might be the purest essence of the art form.

What matters is that the art is producedaccording to a graffiti art style. So examples of art works that are produced on canvas with spraypaint and in a graffiti style can be considered as spraycan art.And the exhortation that graffiti should be on a visible private or public space in order to be in its optimal context is not so muchto glorify any illegalities but rather, to highlight the idea that graffiti is meant to be completely accessible to the public forimmediate appreciation. Also, the increasing acceptance of graffiti art is not due so much to its adoption of traditional techniques. On the contrary, books, magazines, movies, and the artists themselves have helped people to understand how and where graffiti harmonizes withand goes a step beyond traditional methods. For example, wildstyle changes with each artist's interpretation of the alphabet, but it also relies on the use of primary colors, fading, foreground and background, and the like to create these letters. Thus, it is important and valuable to characterize someforms of graffiti as art because this challenges people, who are conditioned to accept art works as art only if they are created ina traditional manner and appear in institutional setting, to appreciate art works that originate and develop outside of theseconstraints.

In doing so, people come to realize graffiti is not an art form that is done just for the sake of rebellious destruction.Quite the opposite, it is an innovative and truly original art form that is meant to bring an aesthetic pleasure to the audience likeany other recognized art form. In summary, some forms of graffiti become art according to four criteria. First, graffiti art is separated from everyday graffitimarkings by the artist's intention to produce a work of art. Second, graffiti art has an established history of development in styleand technique. Third, graffiti art even has been recognized by the art world. A fourth criterion is that the public response tograffiti art indicates that it is art. Whether or not all of the public agrees that graffiti art is good, bad, or extremely valuable is adifferent discussion about evaluation and not whether or not graffiti art is art. The evaluative concerns actually play more intowhere, when, and how graffiti art should be displayed. The above criteria are defensible in so much as they have been used to legitimize other artistic forms. However, what appearsto be the most significant answer to describing how and why graffiti art is art is the notion of understanding where the artist andthe audience synchronize in agreement about a particular work being an example of art. It is a matter of comprehending whatmakes a creation art for the artist and what makes this same creation art for the audience. When and according to what criteriathat these two viewpoints coincide is what thoroughly determines graffiti art as art.

And like other art forms, graffiti art isdefinitively art when both the artist and the audience agree on the works ability to provide maximal aesthetic satisfaction. Whileit is almost impossible to formulate a theory of necessary conditions or rules specifying when graffiti art is art, I think it issufficient to draw on already established aesthetic theories and criteria to point out that some forms of graffiti do qualify as art. Therefore, graffiti in the form of spraycan art is art. It has form, color, and other base properties as well as an arrangement ofthese elements into structures that qualify it aesthetically as being art. Just doing something with spraypaint might make it graffiti, but it does not necessarily qualify it as art or graffiti art. In addition, when the spraycan art is analyzed according to the artist'sintention and value to audience, there is even more evidence to suggest that it is genuine art.

The only obstacle that has hinderedthe general acceptance of graffiti art is its location and presentation. However, the instances of acceptance of graffiti art by theart world shows that conventional methods of presentation are not all that matters in determining if something is art. And graffitiart is not to be disqualified as art simply because it might appear unsolicited. In short, graffiti in the form of spray can art is artlike any other work that might be found in a gallery or a museum.

The Art of Banksy

Banksy is an English Graffiti Artist, yet pseudo-anonymous. He is a native of Yate, near Bristol. He was born and brought up in Bristol, England in 1974. In the beginning he started as a freehand artist of graffiti. As a beginner, he always used stencils. His first work that attracted attention of many artists from Ohio and the UK was "Walls on Fire. " By 2000, he decided to work with stencils because this art was less time consuming than others were.

Banksy's identity will forever be unknown to the world. But his work is very prolific, witty, and subversive. This makes it not so easy to forget his paintings. This graffiti artist decorates walls, zoos, and bridges of cities and towns across the world. His art works portray political, ethical, and cultural aspects of the society, often reflecting irony. His vandalism began in Paris in 1981, where he combined graffiti writing with exceptional stenciling technique like that of Blek le Rat.Banksy's stenciled graffiti's have humorous and attractive images, and sometimes with slogans as well. He always conveys a message through his images.

They are usually pro-freedom, anti-war, anti-establishment or ant-capitalist related. The subjects of his graffiti are often rats, monkeys, elderly, children, police officers, and soldiers. He also designs stickers and makes sculptors. He was also responsible for Blur's 2003's album 'Think Tank's' cover art.

Banksy's work have also been exhibited and bought by celebrities like Christina Aguilera. He has stenciled Mona Lisa in green with paint that dripped from her eyes. This mater piece was sold for 57, 600 pounds. In the year 2007, Banksy made a new record by selling his work, 'Space girl and bird' for 288, 000 pounds.

Besides these, there are many other art pieces that are high profile and classic art pieces of Banksy.
• At London Zoo, he painted, 'We are bored of fish' in a penguin enclosure, which had a height of seven foot.
• At Bristol zoo Banksy wrote, 'I want out. This place is too cold. Keeper smells. Boring. Boring. Boring' for the elephants.
• Banksy's nine paintings on the Israeli West Bank barrier were exceptionally different. Some of Banksy's images rose controversies also.
• Banksy's painting of Mona Lisa with a smiling face in yellow, was hung by Banksy in at Louvre in Paris.
• Diane Shakespeare and Peter Gibson of Keep Britain Tidy said that Banksy's street paintings were nothing but vandalism.
• Banksy's portable toilets made of plastic that resembled Glastonbury Festival's Stonehenge rose controversy.

Although Banksy's paintings and images have arose controversies, art books of his images have been published. 'Banging your head against a brick wall', 'Existencilism', 'Cut it out' and 'wall and piece' are few books that display his paintings. Every day you take a narrow lane with nothing but walls. But one fine day if you notice an image of a nude man hanging from a window, you ought to notice that. This has bought fame and money to Banksy. Who does not want that? Yet, he is anonymous.

Graffiti Canvas Art - Teen Wall Art Decor

My teenage son's graffitilike text on paper and book covers gave me the idea of asking him to make an artwork peice for a decor exhibit I took part in. His contribution was the word Paris in graffitilike text done in pastels on a box-style canvas.

I wanted to share with other teens and mom with teens to encourage their teens in their art form, and that it can be acheive on many other surfaces besides walls.

Hands-on time: An hour or more, depending on detail.

Total time:Plus drying time for varnish.

Skill: this miy teen wall art decor project idea is of easy to moderate skill depending on the details.

Materials & Tools:
•Artist canvas (17.8 x 17.8 centimetres) 3D box-style
•Oil pastels in assorted colours (many brands available, try a few samples)
•Pencil
•Drawing paper and graphite paper
•Graffiti design
•Masking tape
•Permapaque artist markers by Sakura
•Grey and white eraser
•Cloth
•Workable fixative by Krylon

MATERIALS ARE AVAILABLE AT ARTS AND CRAFTS STORES or on line.
MIY INSTRUCTIONS:Art is a great way to interact with teens and encourage self-expression and creativity.

Using a style they're familiar with is even better. What's essential with this project is that it is done in the same spirit as graffiti -- free-flowing expression captured on canvas.

Art is a great way to interact with teens and encourage self-expression and creativity. Using a style they're familiar with is even better. What's essential with this project is that it is done in the same spirit as graffiti --free-flowing expression captured on canvas.

Preprimed canvas is ideal for graffitilike art. On paper, draw or write words (in our case it was the word Paris) to use as a template. With a pencil, draw the text on the canvas or transfer it onto the canvas using graphite paper. Cut out the word from the sheet of paper. Cut a piece of graphite paper in the same size. Put graphite paper under the cutout word and secure with masking tape. Use a pencil or pen to trace the design onto the canvas.

Colour the word or text in three or four colours of pastels, shading in areas around the edges of the letters. Use scrap pieces of paper to practice shading first, if preferred. Glide pastels smoothly onto the canvas and lift the tips as soon as the lines are finished. You can use a cloth or your fingers to blend the colours. Use a wide marker for the outlines. Add a colour border around the letters.

The background is left white. Use the grey part of eraser to remove pencil, graphite lines or pastel smudges. To protect the artwork from dust and smudges, spray on fixative in a side-to-side motion. It fixes the pastels without leaving a glossy finish. Several coats can be applied. Let dry between each coat.

Variations: Use different sizes of canvases to let your teen create his or her mini art gallery. Larger canvases placed side by side have impact. Smaller canvases are perfect for personalized tags. For younger children, create a montage to add colour to a bare wall. Paint several canvases, each in a different solid colour: yellow, blue, green, etc. Then let children doodle on them, using pastels in assorted bright colours. Thick wax crayons or washable markers can also be used. This is a great activity for a birthday party. If your teen wants to do larger frames with spray paints, be sure they work in a well-ventilated area and wear a protective mask. Spray paint fumes are toxic.

Learning Graffiti

It is only recently that graffiti and the street art scene have been viewed as something more than just an underground artistic movement. The image of the lone writer has been transformed from a deviant character to someone who should be showcased and promoted for his or her talents.

With the emergence of street art collectives such as Cable Street, Scrawl Collective and Monorex, a niche has opened in the market for popular graffiti. Almost every night in London, a gallery space or bar is exhibiting the work of an individual graffiti artist. From the world-famous to the new and upcoming, it has never been easier to promote your talents as an artist.

Take Secret Wars, for example, one of the many creations sprung from the London-based company, Monorex. It is a dedicated street art event hosted in Shoreditch, east London, and is designed to showcase the art of approximately 16 artists from around the country, through the medium of a battle. Following in the path of previous battle events such as Jump Off and Throwdown (which are solely about beat boxing, rapping and break dancing), Secret Wars has stretched the concept of street art even further by using the event to broaden interest in graffiti and character art.

Designed like an FA Cup knockout competition, every event sees two artists chucked out of the tournament. The night has had such amazing feedback that almost double the number of artists have requested to be involved in series 2 in late 2007. Even a European tour is in the pipeline. Although numerous attractive prizes are on offer, it is without a doubt the coveted title of Secret Wars champion that spurs the artists on and draws the crowds each month.

Even without events like Secret Wars to boost its popularity, graffiti is making a name for itself with popular brand companies seeking the services of art collectives like Monorex to help promote their latest products. If companies want to target a younger crowd, the successful marketing and branding of a product is key.

Graffiti and everything associated with it, from the music to the fashion, is the new cool. The once vilified vandals now have fan bases the size of a pop star's. People in all four corners of the earth have heard of the likes of Banksy and D*face. Magazines are quick to pick up on the next big thing, and often request interviews with upcoming art collectives or selected artists. Vinyl toy designers celebrate the talent of graffiti and often produce limited-edition toy designs by the next big name in graff.

With graffiti becoming ever more popular, some people believe that its eventual demise is inevitable. However, if the artists stay true to what graffiti is about then it can undoubtedly still prosper on an underground level even when the big brands move on to the next latest craze. Graffiti is really about the art and that's how it will always be appreciated, no matter how popular it gets.

Graffiti Qualify as Art

Since its birth, graffiti, or graffito in singular form, has always met two very conflicting views from people. For the conservatives, it is nothing more than a form of vandalism. For the modernists, it is an art form.

Consisting from simple scratches to elaborate paintings on the wall, this art form is ancient and, like time, has evolved a hundred fold. In earliest times, the cavemen used it on the cave walls to depict their day to day activities, and the ancient Greeks used it in "modern style" to advertise prostitution. In this manner, the Greeks carved a handprint that looks like a heart beside a footprint and a number, indicating that a brothel is near.

The Romans used it to carve love poems, love letters, alphabets, slogans or any other messages that they want to convey to the public in general in a fast way, on their walls and monuments. For them, it was a way of advertising and easy information dissemination. Not only did they do the art form in letters, they also had it in pictures. An example of this would be a second century carving of a crucified donkey that many believe to be a depiction of Jesus Christ.

Despite the many reproofs, famous artists and painters had made use of it for plain amusement or for their profession. At one time, Renaissance artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, Filippino Lippi, Pinturrichio, and Ghirlandaio went to visit Nero's Domus Aurea ruins and carved, or painted, their names resulting to a new style of decoration of that era. A lot of evidences provide information that the Americans, the French, the Egyptians, the Malays, the Japanese and the Chinese of early times had also made use of it.

This just goes to show that no matter how hard some people refute and regard it as junk, this certain art form is part of their culture and history.

In this day and time, graffiti has evolved greatly and has become part and parcel of the hip hop society and culture. With the technology available at hand, instead of carving the messages or images on the walls, the ones who make use of this art form now make use of the most handy aerosol spray cans, making it the most used tool for the modern art form. Because of this, graffiti has become a street art form and along with it emerged new styles. The first one is the basic form called the tag style. Because of its ease in execution being just a representation of an artist's name, it is most often used to gain recognition and as a signature of a larger piece. Next is where one makes a layer of color then outlines it with another color.

This is called the throw-up style. Next style is the blockbuster style, which is made up of block letters making it very easy to read. The last style is called wild style and is made up of blended letters which are highly decorated.

Create Your Own Graffiti Style

Today there are lots of different types of graffiti, many of which are not illegal and do not deface other people’s property. This is the type of graffiti you want to produce, if graffiti is what interests you. The following tips will give you ideas on what kind of graffiti you might want to try and then help you find your own style.
Instructions

Step1 Try light graffiti. This is a new type of graffiti where you use different types of light sources, and then use time lapsed photography to record your work. This type of graffiti allows you to create what you would never be able to draw or spray paint and there is no vandalism to worry about here. To do this you will need different types of lights like flashlights, bike lights, glow sticks, blinking led lights and other types of light that give an interesting glow. You can make this light a part of any urban setting, a phone booth, a fire hydrant, a sidewalk or even a wall. Of course you will need to do this type of graffiti at night because you need the full effect of the light. All you need to do is set up the lights in a pleasing composition. You will also need a tripod and you will need to set your camera on a twenty to thirty second exposure to photograph the light well.

Step2 Start your own reverse Graffiti. Another type of graffiti you might want to try is what is called reverse graffiti. In this type of graffiti, you use brushes, soap, water and cleaning agents. What you do is clean the areas that form the graffiti or the writing. You want to choose walls, windows or areas that are really grimy, then you want to draw out your forms by cleaning the area that makes up the drawing.

Step3 Paint it on the walls--when you decide to do your own normal graffiti find walls and sections that need to be cleaned up and ask the owner for permission. Before you go out and spray paint, you will probably want to make a stencil drawing of your letters or forms before painting. Take the stencil, spray paints and adhesive for the stencil.
Tips & Warnings
There are a variety of ways of doing graffiti and the methods listed here are not invasive, defacing or illegal. Some are temporary like the light graffiti and even reverse graffiti and other forms and styles for graffiti are more permanent. Finding your own style involves trying different types of graffiti.

Graffiti Art - Hip Hop

In this article, we'll take graffiti art to mean wall art drawn with spray cans in public places. This is necessary to avoid confusion, for graffiti art can also be taken to mean an act of vandalism in a very general sense.

But when I was taking a closer look at the origins of graffiti art, it appears that this art form didn't appear out of nowhere. In fact, it has risen out of a need for expression from people who didn't have the money and the means to participate actively in both the art and the music scenes.

This urge or need to express became so strong that these people started creating their own art and music using what was available to them. And not much was available to them. So they turned to using their mouths (beat-boxing), scratching on tables (to simulate the scratching of records) and invented rap. Hip hop evolved out of rap music.

But the names and labels isn't all that important. What's more important is to understand the intent behind these art forms. What caused these people to invent hip hop music and graffiti art?
At the root of it is rebellion. There's something that these artists are unhappy about, and they're letting the world know about it. For instance, if you're a fan of rap music, you'll often hear some angry lyrics. It's not within the scope of this article to discuss the source of anger. For now, it's good enough to understand that rap and hip hop music stems usually stems from anger.

Similarly, for graffiti art, rebellion is made known by creating wall murals in public places. Doing this is illegal but yet, many have done this and it does appear that graffiti art is now out of control.Artists worldwide have chosen this particular outlet to express themselves, to make sure that they're heard. Graffiti art has been known to be a tool to get attention.

But what has this strong urge to grab attention (so much so that artists have to risk their neck by spraying on walls illegally) got to do with hip hop music?

Well, understanding the culture where hip hop music and graffiti music come from (and they come from the same source), one would guess that graffiti art could be the cheapest form of advertising (in fact, it's free!). It's the ultimate word-of-mouth marketing for the hip hop artists. And in essence, since both art forms represent the same dissent voices of the people of that culture, who's to say or judge it's wrong to create graffiti art?

American Graffiti

Everything connected with US wines has been in a growth mode for the past five years including retail sales, publications, online blogs, classes, 5 million private wine clubs, tastings, direct-sales, private label wines, home wine cellars and popular wine bars.

Hollywood celebs have turned winemakers and two high-profile films signaled the mainstreaming of wine culture. The Cannes Film Festival Palme D'Or was awarded to the documentary "Mondovino" (world wines) and 'Sideways" won the Oscar and Golden Globe and won over a legend of new fans to Pinot Noir. With the popularity of these films more grocery store aisles were designated for wines. And because women buy 60% of all the vinos--labels became snazzier. Then an Internet wine chat room moniker, Two-Buck-Chuck, ignited a Web 2.0 firestorm that fueled the fastest-growing brand sales in wine's 8,000 year history.

If 'American Graffiti' signaled the end of our country's adolescent years, can the national shift to wine signify that we are on the cusp of a spiritual awakening? Because beer is a drink for the body while wine is a drink for the soul.

With 700 wine blogs on the Internet and a public eager to learn more about wines perhaps the US is moving to more refined tastes. For certain the wine industry is adopting Green as the gold standard. And with more consolidation creating beverage behemoths, plus higher transportation costs, the small family wineries--like the rest of our culture--need to be adaptive, proactive and nimble.

With wine's spiritual connotations that stand for wisdom, immortality, joy, youth and vitality--maybe its rise in this Age of Transition is a message for us all.

Graffiti has been a problem

Graffiti has been a problem in urban areas for decades, but it’s spread far beyond the city limits. ‘Taggers’ use anything from permanent felt markers to aerosol spray cans to leave their marks on anything that doesn’t move – or at least stays still long enough for them to leave their artwork on it. In the process, they rack up an impressive £200 million cleaning bill – footed by you, in the form of county taxes.

The manufacturers of markers and paints haven’t helped the matter much, either, though it’s only a side effect of them giving us what we want. When you apply a coat of paint to that porch chair, for example, you want a reasonable assurance that you won’t need to repaint it next month. Paint manufacturers put billions into researching ways to make their paints adhere to surfaces better and last longer. The end result – paints that will stay on your patio deck for decades. Unfortunately, those same paints are near to impossible to remove when they’re used to brand an innocuous business front with some tagger’s logo.

The solution being used by more and more municipal councils and private businesses is the application of anti graffiti finishes on any surface that is likely to collect signatures and the other expected drivel. Anti graffiti finishes come in several different types and offer differing levels of protection. While they don’t prevent graffitists from making their marks, they do ease the difficulty of cleanup – and if you’ve every been faced with a scrawled epithet on a white-washed wall, you know how important that can be.

Sacrificial anti graffiti coatings
One method of easing the removal of graffiti is the application of a coating of wax or acrylic that protects the surface beneath it. Anti graffiti wax is the least expensive short term solution, and may be suitable for a surface that isn’t likely to be targeted. Once the wax has been graffitied, the wax and graffiti are removed together by melting the wax, often with a stream of hot water. The drawback, of course, is that the sacrificial anti graffiti coatings are one use only. Once you’ve removed the graffiti, you need to reapply the wax to restore the protection.

Semi permanent anti graffiti coatings
A step up from the sacrificial coatings are semi permanent anti graffiti coatings. These are often based on polymers, polyesters, acrylics or epoxy and can be applied in multiple layers. While the graffiti agent – marker, paint or whatever – adheres to the coating, it doesn’t adhere to the wall or surface beneath it, and can be removed. Most often, removal will require the use of some chemical cleaner, and eventually, sometimes after only one or two cleanings, the anti graffiti barrier will have worn away, exposing the underneath surface.

Permanent anti graffiti coatings
Generally the most expensive up front of the anti graffiti measures, permanent anti graffiti coatings are likely to save money over the long run. The coatings are similar to those used in non-stick pans. They offer nothing for the paint or markers to adhere to, making it easy to simply whisk graffiti away with nothing more than soap and water.

In addition to anti graffiti coatings, many providers of industrial cleaners supply powerful anti graffiti cleaners which are meant to remove the spray paint or marker while causing as little damage to the underlying wall as possible. For buildings and areas that are less tempting targets, this solution is sometimes quite enough.

Achieve Goals Instead of Watch Graffiti

While sitting in my car waiting for a long, slow train to move past and hoping that it wouldn't come to a frustrating stop just a few cars before clearing the crossing. I thought about my mental list of goals for the day, the week, and the rest of the year. Instead of reading the graffiti painted on the sides of the railroad cars I went over my New Year's Resolutions to see how I was doing.

Happily, I discovered that I was well on the way to accomplishing some of those tasks. I knew that I was mired in a few. But funny thing, I could only remember about half of my list. By that time the train had past and I went on my way but when I got back to my office I went to my "Goals" folder and copied them down three times.

The first time was on a business-card size piece of heavy paper which I put in the credit card section of my wallet so I would be constantly reminded of my goals every time I use my credit card. The second time was on a full-size piece of paper which I placed in my daily planner. The third time was on a form I use every day in my computer. Now I can't escape or forget about my goals and I am making faster progress towards accomplishing them. They help me make my weekly and daily "to-do" lists and make me more productive.

I discovered that the act of writing them out was helpful, but when they were in that folder they were out of sight and out of mind. Bringing them into the light of day brought them into my consciousness a number of times every day where I cannot miss seeing them. Those messages act as a kick in the backside to keep moving me in the direction I want to go... and that's forward!
What progress are you making towards your goals? Put them where you can't avoid them and you'll make progress also.

Free Graffiti Fonts 2007

One of the most popular font categories on this website is Graffiti Fonts, but what exactly is a graffiti? The word Graffiti is actually the plural of Graffito which means a drawing or inscription made on a wall or other surface, usually meant to be seen by the public.

Other than simply showing off the artist’s name and artwork, graffiti has been employed for other purposes as well. It has been used in the past to spread social and political messages, and as a form of advertising. It is also considered a modern art form, and can be seen in galleries around the world.

How to Draw Graffiti Names

Graffiti art has, over time, become a form of artistic drawing. In another article, I've captured the main characteristics of artistic art in more detail but let's do a quick review here.

We know that graffiti art is often loud (meaning brightly colored), has a 3D look and feel to it, and looks mostly stylish. One might even classify graffiti art as contemporary art. Everything about graffiti is an expression of the culture of some group or country.

Although graffiti art is most widely known as art drawn by vandals on public walls with spray cans, the same term can be extended to represent art with similar characteristics as mentioned above.

You may be drawn to drawing graffiti names because graffiti art looks stylish with its bright attractive colors, and that applies to graffiti texts as well.

To start drawing graffiti names, you need to prepare the following drawing tools. You need a light pencil, preferrably HB, and a set of permanent magic markers with a variety of colors.

Next, you need to decide on the style of the texts. There are literally thousands of styles to choose from. Just take a look at the thousands of font types available freely on the Internet for download. You may want to visit one of these websites and choose a font design that you really like. You'll be using this as your reference. Some websites even allow you to create a preview image with the selected font type. Simply save the image to your computer for reference.

Start drawing with your pencil on the surface. Draw lightly at first so that you can erase any mistakes you make. Sometimes, your texts may be too big or small, and you can easily rectify this by using a dust free eraser.

Once you're satisfied with how the graffiti name looks, trace the outline with a fine magic marker. The shapes will start to emerge now. Then start filling in the different letters with colors. Be bold and creative here. After all, it's graffiti texts, so you want it to come out attractive, bold and stylish.

Use a different color to create some shades just inside the outlines. This will create the illusion that the texts are 3D. If you're familiar to using Photoshop or any image editing software, this is similar to creating the emboss effect.

Drawing the drop shadow is optional but if you want your graffiti name to look more alive and realistic, by all means give your graffiti name a light shadow below.

Graffiti Art - A Solution to Urban Decay

Graffiti is a friendly aspect as often as one would think it as a own one. More people who are anti to ornamentation, see it as a icon of interpersonal analysis, rebellious knowledge and a need of module of citizenship.

Should ornament writers be allowed to do anything they desirable? I am a keen worshiper that 'dominated decoration' has solon benefits than pessimistic impacts on the society. It is harmonious that mischievousness is not greet in the gild. Withal, there are more ornament writers who cater decoration art as a work of dominion beautification. By vocation beautification, I contemplate graffiti art in urban 'extinct spaces'. They support to flavour up abandoned urbanised blight and educate the unexclusive on gregarious issues.

Graffiti art is a opposition to additional forms of semipublic art. Art attribute that requires no room organisation and no merchandizing and advert fuss. There is a somesthesia that overt publicizing is the genuine venture of citified disintegration. Too overmuch transaction has caused the declined of overt power towards governmental and party concerns.

Graffiti art is a object for people to unite with. It is the perfect platform for urban dwellers to bed what is effort on with a city. Perception at the authorship on the surround, you can enjoin what are the friendly and governmental problems that are happening in the land.

Graffiti art is the eventual reflexion of artistic philosophy. It is a apodictic image of the content that it comes from. Graffiti artists publicise to the open a hefty message-we should be much headache with sociable issues amid the influx of negative mercantilism.

Mastering Ornamentation Art

Graffiti art doesn't fair intend art we see sprayed on walls. In fact, ornamentation art has much bullocky characteristics that it's undemanding to begrime them everyplace - in schools, on sidewalks, on bicycles, on automobiles, on skateboards and on textbooks, right to obloquy a few examples.

Ornament art has a change undergo about it. There are no demanding rules to creating ornamentation art, eliminate a few different characteristics that e'er puddle ornament art happen voguish. Let's see what those characteristics are.

Premier, ornamentation art are commonly relinquish forms. But these forms are ordinarily vindicatory liquid enough to equal what they're questionable to personify. The shapes are generally created, and the subjects representation one other in a kinda ergodic kind. Highlights are practical to the soul if needful but again, these are generally applied.

Gear, texts are usually viewable, and haggard in an raised demeanor that gives a 3D notion. These texts commonly attribute a few words or a truncate locution, and makes up a air of the intact graffiti art.

And finally, graffiti art is usually created with a schoolwide difference of colors. Silvery and luminous emblem similar red, citrus, yellowness, unaged and dismal are preferred. There's young or no intention for timbre harmony and the goal here is to create a impressive regalia of colours that gain attending to the graffiti art itself.

Due to these characteristics, it's no perturbation that we see so many teenagers state tired to graffiti art. But erstwhile you license these characteristics, you'll also develop to interpret that it's not all that adamantine to make a tack of decoration art, symmetric if you know young nearly art.

For a signal, you may impoverishment to perception up many tattoo images to use as book images or to entertainer breath. Images similar skulls or roses alter uppercase subjects for decoration art.

Erstwhile you somebody your individual intelligent, you'll poorness many performance markers as healthy. Try out the selfsame representation using divers flag and see which end conclusion you elevate. You may also desire to add in several texts.

Glittering markers alter an excellent draftsmanship means for ornamentation art. I'm trusty you'll tally a lot of fun with these markers. And don't forget, never draw on people concept without authorisation!

Start a Graffiti Cleaning Business
